WLS makes use of various types of slings., including webslings, coreslings and marino slings. The slings are placed around the cargo in sheds or alongside the vessel prior to loading. They are hooked to the vessel's gantry cranes, allowing toplifting of the cargo while being placed in the vessel's holds.

Besides damage-free handling they also permit optimal use of the cranes' capacity. In preparation of discharge, slings are usually left on the cargo once it has been loaded and stowed in the vessel. At the destination, stevedores simply pick up the sling ends and hook them to the vessel's cranes, allowing easy, fast, damage-free and efficient discharging operations.
